The Philippines is one of the major pirating countries in the world. It's estimated that 45% of all music CDs sold there are pirated. Three pirate video or music CDs sell for about $2. But there's international pressure to get them to stop the practice.
So they went on a pirate-crushing venture where they arrested some of the offenders, took 2 million pirated CDs and DVDs, and crushed them all with four steamrollers. The event was watched by President Arroyo herself.
They have another 1.6 million in the hopper waiting to be crushed, and they haven't gone after the biggest piraters yet.
But the Philippines will never top China, where it's thought that 90% of all such goods are pirated.
