Windows technical question
When I try to play certain MP3 files using Windows Media Player (latest version) I get the error "Class Not Registered".
Does anyone know what this means and further, how to register a class so that I can play the file? Thank you Brian

Windows Media Player 9?
Brian,
Grab that and the codecs and patches (argh) and you should be OK to go. |

It means your music is insufficiently classy. You need to improve the quality of music you listen to.
I've given up on WMP long ago, and repeatedly. I'll give WMP a spin every time I get or install a new Windows box, but it doesn't take long before all the stupids drive me way. WinAmp for music, BSPlayer for video. You'll be much happier. (So to answer your question, I have no clue, sorry.) |

It has nothing to do with me...it's a friend who is Clueless with a capital C. To tell him to reinstall WMP and then update his codecs would entail an hour of explaining each program and how it works alone and together with the others, then handholding him through the process step by step. And I don't use Win98SE.
I swear, if I have to drive all the way to Marcus Hook one more time to unfuck his puter, I'm going to install Linux and prevent him from installing ANY software. Then at least I can administer to his system remotely. Brian

Have him upgrade to xp, then you can administer remotely.

OpenSSH and Terminal Services = a good thing
BrianR,
You can install OpenSSH for Windows and take care of everything remotely with VNC also, and that'll save time and headaches. There's still some stuff that's not 100% with Remote Desktop. Mitch |

The other reason I want him on Linux is that he doesn't know of any P2P software (which causes most of his problems) that will run. Don't tell him about WINE or whatever P2P app there is (I bet my bottom penny there is) for Linux. He needs to be saved from himself.
Now if only I can learn enough of Linux to become an overnight administrator. hehehe sigh I'm still trying to figure out how to fix his lack of music problem from here. Brian

I have not tested this, use at your own risk:
"Win Media Player 9 fails to load the libraries necessary to activate many streaming audio and video windows. The libraries are referred to as DLL files and they reside in your windows/system directory. The solution is to: 1. Download Win Media Player 7.1 from the MS site; 2. Disconnect from your internet connection; 3. Close all other programs; 4. Activate the 7.1 setup program; 5. Select "reinstall all components"; 6. The program will advise that setup has failed (its looking for files over the internet), then force you to reboot; 7. When you reboot, 7.1 setup will begin updating your windows settings. Actually, it will be loading and registering the libraries you need to open streaming windows; 8. WinMedPlyr 9 will remain intact; open and use it as normal." Hope it works for ya! |
