Mystery Food Exchange

Not what they serve at the nursing home cafeteria.

Just like the cookie exchange but without the cookies. Bread, scones, lemon bars, candy... Whatever's not cookies (sheet cookies are okay, since they're not really cookies) and won't spoil in transit.

If you want to participate, PM or email me your email address, mailing address and any allergies. If you email me, please include your cellar handle too. If you're willing to ship international and you're going to make something that will make the trip, let me know. People outside the US, I'm happy to organize things for you guys too.

Also, if you participated in the cookie exchange let me know who you sent to and who sent to you and I can try to make sure you don't end up sending to all of the same people.

Friday the 27th of March is the cutoff date for getting your name in the hat. I will try to divy things up so everyone is sending to 3 people. I'll PM/email the assignments by March 30th. Then hopefully everyone can send out their goodies by April 13.

By special request, a slight modification/clarification of the rules: Non-homemade things are acceptable as long as they are something special. Regional favorites, hard to find items. Use your best judgement.

Perry, you've had a foot either side of the pond - what do you think would be suitable to send to the States?

I'd love to participate, but right now, everything quintessentially English I can think of needs to be chilled. I mean, I've already done tea & biscuits (Clod's Secret Santa). I know I am missing aisles and aisles of the supermarket in my mind (no I am NOT cooking!) but I seem to be stuck.

Jaffa Cakes maybe?
They're not really biscuits after all. Or Tunnocks Tea Cakes?

I'm certainly up for something savoury in exchange. Slim Jims or Jerky?

This sounds so cool! As much as I want to join in, I'm going to have to skip the mystery food trade because I'm trying to finish up my last semester of undergrad and the work load is driving me crazy. I'm looking forward to seeing pictures and living vicariously, though.

SG, in the order I'd want them: a Crunchie bar, clotted cream, mushy peas, HP sauce, pork pie (or any meat pie eaten cold).

Linda's Pastys makes great pies. They're based in Anaconda, MT. We can get them at Safeway in Helena. Might be able to send some to you more successfully and safely than SG could.

Anything at this site actually.

Except for two things. One, no Turkish Delights. They are foul.

Two, no toffee. People think British dentistry is bad, but it's actually that the toffee is so freakin' thick and sticky that it pulls out all of your teeth. The only way to sensibly eat it is to put it in your mouth, allow it to stick to your teeth like that stuff dentists use to get an impression of your teeth, and just let it slowly melt.

My SIL admitted the toffees are the first thing to go out of the Quality Street in their house.
I had to tell my bro how wrong this was. He agreed.

Look, I only get £120.24 a fortnight.
And much of that goes on debts/ paying the 'rents for living here.
