Soviets failed lunar program
This article has pictures of the lunar lander the soviets had ready to land on the Moon first. It seems everything was ready, to be there first, except they didn't have rockets to do the job.

Just think what could have been accomplished if we had worked together.
I guess that would have been against the point of the whole space race. |

We're working together now, and ended up with a space station that does no real science.
