3/27/2003: Brit pigeon fights along troops
![]() His name is "Harry". He's not one of the sniffer birds looking for chemical attacks. He was shipped to Iraq by the British, by accident, in a package of rations. As the AP caption says, the pigeon was "liberated" by the Quartermasters of 3 reg AAC when they opened their latest supplies. Fly pigeon! Be free! And take a big ol pigeon shit on the opposition forces! |

Is this bird now hanging around by choice, or was this photo taken just before he flew off to be sucked into the engine of an F-16?

Because my head doesn't work like other people's ...
Harry is certainly cute (for a pigeon) and may even have a mascot-like position with the Brit forces ... but has anyone considered what might happen if Harry starts hanging out with an Iraqi flock? (or, more likely, eaten by an Iraqi hawk or falcon, or whatever winged predators they have) Imagine birds all over Iraq dropping dead of some British pigeon-illness to which they have no resistance.
Harry could be the first WMD deployed in GWII.

I don't think I can claim that though. I think Chevy Chase did that on SNL news back in '75. I've been waiting for 28 years to say that, so I should get the patience award.

Fox News showed a pic of Harry last night (same one, I think) in which he was described as one of the sniffer bird, including obligatory 'canary in a coal mine' references by the co-anchors.
I was just about to pass out, so I don't recall which talking heads were on at the time. It was around 0330 hrs, though.
