7/8/2003: Mummified monkey
![]() Thanks to Elspode for passing this along, and I figured it wasn't really appropriate for Friday... It turns out that ancient Egyptians felt that some animal forms were sacred, and many had pets, even the pharoahs. So they prepared pets using the same mummification process as they did the humans, and many of them are still preserved. This news image comes about because the Egyptian Museum in Cairo is now having a display of these mummified animals, which include cats, dogs, monkeys, and even crocodiles and gazelles. I personally wouldn't have a croc or gazelle as a pet, but those wacky pharoahs... (Reuters story) |

They loved their pets so much they had them slaughtered and stuffed? You always hurt the ones you love.

Or, perhaps the animal died of natural causes before its human and said human had the animal mummified in anticipation of their own death.

The shadow of his profile on the wall is cool.
Insightful photographers catch good shadows like that.
I am really glad you didn't post it for the Friday shot. ![]() |

People are doing the same thing today with their beloved passed on pets. Taxidermists must be direct descendents of these people.

Of course those who want more info can go to www.animalmummies.com. (I think I read about this in KMT magazine before I let my subscription slide.) |

There is a company in my town that calls themselves:
Non-Typical Taxidermy Did it just strike me on a strange day? Am I the only one who thinks that is a non-typical (to say the least) name for a taxidermy company? |

Maybe they really specialize in non-typical work ... no deer, moose, or bobcats ... just things like grandma?

ah.
That was another weird thing about it. When I first spotted their name on the company truck, it was pulling out of the driveway of a being-constructed mausoleum in one of the local cemeteries.
Maybe they were just offering some non-typical consultation for the mausoleum builders. |

TAXIDERMIST- I'm so sorry your two monkeys died. Do you want them mounted?
CUSTOMER- No, they were just friends. ![]()

non-typical in the rough...
What do you think about this alternative? You or your friends or pets could become a carbon jewel.

If my family creates a jewel out of me when I die, does that mean if I'm really large that I'll be more valuable in the afterlife?

maybe larger body mass would just leave behind a larger-carat jewel in the beforelife?

"Did you bring your ex-wife tonight?"
"No, I've sent her off to the shop for a week to be thoroughly cleaned." |
