Micro-quake in New Jersey

From the U.S. Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center
World Data Center for Seismology, Denver

Preliminary Earthquake Report

Now, I could have sworn that I felt some kind of aftershock from this. I remember earlier this morning, while on the computer, I suddenly heard a loud, deep booming thud-like noise that sounded like it was coming from the basement of my apartment building. Then, the whole building started vibrating. I had no earthly idea what all the noise was, but after hearing what happened 10 miles away today...I have to wonder. I swear, it sounded and felt like someone was throwing a car around in the apartment below me...heh!

Aftershock from a 2.2? Not too likely.

Aside to God: Good try, but a little harder. Remember, the idea is to break off the whole state and slide it into the sea, not just mix a few drinks for the morning crowd.

Then I guess those downstairs neighbors are throwing around an elephant in their apartment, because the noise that I heard/felt was shaking the whole building.

We were lying on a NJ beach when the ground shook. Earthquake? No we learned later. The Concorde would remain supersonic until 50 miles out. When air and humidity was just right, a sonic boom would still reach shore. It was not an earthquake. As a result, the Concorde had to go subsonic 200 miles out. Felt like the ground was shaking. But sound alone is not sufficient evidence.

Another time, the ground sounded like it was shaking. An earthquake? Some thought so. Later we learned that a barge carrying aviation fuel had exploded some 17 miles out to sea. The rumbling continued for a few seconds. In hindsight, we thought that light flash a minute earlier was lightning. Amazing that the Inky had the complete story inside that little white box outside our house only 10 hours later.
