Scientists grow jaw in man's back muscle

A German who lost his jaw to mouth cancer got to eat his first solid food in a decade. German doctors used a mesh cage, a growth chemical derived from cow bones, and the patient’s own bone marrow, containing stem cells, to create a new jaw bone. The mesh cage was implanted in his back to grow there. Once the bone had developed, it was transplanted to his mouth.

So what did the guy eat after a decade of apple sauce and soup? A bratwurst.

MSNBC article with pictures

I think this is amazing.

Doesn't sound too comfortable, does it? It looked from the pictures like the jaw was grown sort of under his arm, on the side of his back. But it must have felt awfully funny.

This is pretty good for a "chocolate making country." I wonder if having no limits on stem cell research helps them. I expect to see more of these amazing medical breakthroughs in the future in Europe.

He eats steak now, but complains to his doctor that because he has no teeth he has to cut it into such small pieces that by the time he gets to the end of the steak, it’s cold.

Waaah waaah waaaah I want a jaw.

Waaah waaah waaaah I want teeth.

Sheesh, some people...

In all seriousness though, that is a perfect example of the amazing accomplishments of modern science.

Ah, yes, but they plan to give him some teeth in the future, if everything goes well with the transplanted jaw.

This is so cool.

Good thing Bush is trying to limit stem cell research here, then. Can't have a bunch of people going around getting new jaws. Next thing you know, they'd be yapping up a storm about how we need more stem cell research.

Call me when they get the technology to grow and implant a tail. And maybe a pair of lupine-style earlobes.
