Australia, anyone?

So I'm thinking of moving to Australia sometime in the next year or so. I've been poking around and looking at possibly Sydney, though I'm nowhere near stone-carving phase of the plan yet.
I've also looked at the job market, and what I might have to go through to apply for a work-visa. All the applications and whatnot are fairly expensive (US$707 just for the migration application!!). I'm also looking at what it would cost to get my cat and my girlfriend's dog over, which seems to be a little pricy for just a quarantine from a fairly clean country.
Aside from what I've already said, is there any relevant info anyone could lay on me? Even info on the stuff I've mentioned would help infinitely. I tried to email jaguar from here, but I haven't received a response, which leads me to believe he's a CS student that doesn't check his email (yea, sure), or he doesn't care to see his country get over-run with another joker from Texas.

Where are you planning on moving exactly? Sydney is well....Sydney, big, brash and expensive. Melbourne is a beautiful city, very green, good nightlife, really nice atmosphere in the city, great place to live. It all depends on where you live. I advise against Brisbane/Queensland, its the redneck state of Australia. Canberra is a godforsaken hole in the middle of nowhere, so we built a city full of politicians, porn and fireworks there. Perth is ok, Darwin is like an outpost in the middle of nowhere and Adelaide is good if you like water you can stand on and an entire city without a social life. If you kow where you want to go and its Melbourne i can give you more detail than you'll ever need. Either way drop me an e-mail or put a msg here if you've got questions.

Visas are very hard to get, it may be worth hiring an immigration agent here, they can streamline and assist what can be a very expensive and complicated process, they make you jump though a lot of hoops to get here. Got any pets? 6 month quarantine.

I had originally thought of moving to Sydney, mainly because it seemed to be the city that offered the broadest spectrum. From there, I figured visiting other cities would help me to decide where I'd want to eventually live.
I haven't decided on permanently settling there, but I would like to visit for more than 6 months. Since I will be there that long, I would need a job, and that's where the problems come up. I had thought of moving as a Skilled Migrant, but then I started hearing about how the economy is doing, and that I might have a hard time, even with an IT background. That's when I checkout monster.com, and found almost nothing. I guess I could always be a bartender (Aussies drink, right?). I doubt I'd get sponsorship working in a bar, though.
I do have a cat, and I read from the AFFA that it might only be 30 day quarantine.
I've read from misc.immigration.australia+nz that the process is expidited when one is fully prepared. I just don't think I want to spend the money (700+ for applying, 1000+ for animals, 800+ airline, plus moving expenses). Then there are the fees if I decide to go with an immigration service. It just seems like a bunch of cash to spend just to live somewhere for a few years.
Any other ideas? Do you know anyone that has done this? Thanks for (finally

It will eb difficult, and it will be expensive, just be thankful you're not British, its even harder. If the cat is 30 days you're damn lucky, thats all i can say. The economy is not too shabby but IT work is rarer than hens teeth at the moment (i'm looking too) but you might get lucky. Only catch with Sydney is it is *expensive* but as i said, i'm biased.

As i think you're starting to nitice the immigration system is one huge pile of red tape, an agent is nto a bad idea, tehy'll explain the best angle of attack and wil deal with the paperwork for you, trust me, you'll apprecaite it later, moving countries is stressful enough as it is. On the otehr hand i don''t know how comlicated it is for americans, it might be far more streamlined.
