Masked Hackers
I followed a banner ad link to a promotion of Zone Alarm Pro, the firewall from Zone Labs Inc. Half of the promotional page was this advertisement.

I figure they do it to make the hacker look more like a burglar. You associate all of the negative connotations of burglary with hacking. Then you buy their product. :whofarted

That's no hacker ...
Just an involved Quake 3 player, using the classic mouse+keyboard controls.

I got one question
Who the hell could wear a ski mask anymore that *wasn't* a bad guy. Skiiers? I don't think so, somebody would see them and say "Look - a ski terrorist!"
What garment company out there still makes the things, thinking "oh man, gonna be a tough winter, better roll a few thousand ski masks". Yeah, right. What stores carry them anymore? How could you buy one without arousing suspicion? I mean I just could never do it. |

Pfft, that's no hacker: he's on a Macintosh computer. Notice the 1 button mouse and the key above the numberpad (that key is the power on/off key for Macs).

No doubt. An old Macintosh, at that. Those keyboards and mice haven't been put out for years.

Reminds me of a favorite ad.. should have a copy around somewhere... for Zip drives, probably about 8 yrs old... it shows a teenage boy using a computer & looking scared like something bad just happened. The caption is, "You have insurance in case Johnny crashes the car... do you have insurance in case he crashes the computer?"

I showed this to somebody on ICQ, and he was horrified that there were people that existed who knew that much about Macs.
kbarger: I remember that one too! Someone gave me a used computing magazine a few years ago, and that ad was in it. |

from everything all y'all have said, I'll wager that the original image was a stock photo. Stock photos with computers in them are usually inappropriate as in way out of date. There would have been no reason for Zone Alarm to do custom photography just for their site.

ski masks
DSCP and Flying Cross still make them for the US Navy.
The ski mask is part of the regular seabag issue, or it was when I was issued mine. And I've bought one since then, too. Brian |

Masks?
Hmm.... Did anybody else wonder what the heck a hacker needs a mask for?
The hacker must worry about log files, IP traces, etc. Basically all evidence against him will be data. No visuals of the hacker himself. Crazy.... |
