This thread is a spin-off of the Journalists in a war zone.

My question is, with the reporting of every American casualty, can the United States ever successfully carry out another military campaign? WWII American casualties totaled 295,000. And nobody wants that to happen again. But if the situation arose today, would we let the Jews die in camps? Would we ignore the needs of others do to our reservations?(see: 1994 Rwanda Hutu/Tutsi genocide) Can we "fight the good fight" despite the medias presence? And is fighting the good fight, less important than American popular opinion?

Democracy has always been the worst government to fight a war over. Itdepends on the viability of the war. Take vietnam for example, a stupid ideological point scoring game that cost 50,000 american lives onteh promise of the extremely dubious 'diomino theory'. People got extremely pissed off and protested, so the government shot htem, then they got even more pissed off. WW2 on the other hand was in the long run, possible an issue of survival, particualry after pearl harbour.
Its bodybag politicls >50odd deaths is ok, big funerals, lotsa medals, big hooha, lots of media, all good. Stacks of bodies being unloaded just is not good though. We have to remember that the govt can still gag and control the media in ties of war, WW2 is the best example when propaganda machiens on both sides were running full tilt. If such a huge all out war for survival thign was to happen again a: we'd all be dead, nukes, bio/chem weapons. b: for the half an hour or so before they landed i'm sure the media would be tightly controlled again. Reminds me of tom Lehrer So long, Mom I'm off to drop the bomb So don't wait up for me But while you swelter Down there in your shelter You can see me On your TV While we're attacking frontally Watch Brinkally and Huntally Describing contrapuntally The cities we have lost No need for you to miss a minute Of the agonizing holocaust, yeah Little Johnny Jones he was a U.S. pilot And no shrinking vi'let was he He was mighty proud when World War Three was declared He wasn't scared, no siree! And this is what he said on His way to Armageddon So long, Mom I'm off to drop the bomb So don't wait up for me But though I may roam I'll come back to my home Although it may be A pile of debris Remember, Mommy I'm off to get a commie So send me a salami And try to smile somehow I'll look for you when the war is over An hour and a half from now
