Question Linux help

Linux experts please help....
Using an HP N5470 laptop...AMD Athlon 1GHZ, 256 RAM, 20 gig HD, Trident Cyberblade Vid Card (8mb ram). Uses Win XP.
Trying my hand with Linux...so I repartioned my HD, installed Mandrake 8.2 on a 5.0 gig partition. Now....the computer has a habit of just shutting down when in Linux, not windows. But it occasionally does do it in windows.
Called HP, and they had me remove the battery and ram, and drain the power. It seems to have worked, because Windows no longer seems to be randomly shutting down. But, it didnt work for Linux, because I can only run it for 10 mins or so before it kills itself.
THought it might be Mandrake itself, so I began to load Red Hat 8.0, but in the middle of the installation, it to killed itself.
Everyone else who has installed Linux on this same model laptop has never had such a problem.

ANy ideas guys?

Did you disable any power-saving features in the BIOS?

I looked for any of those features in my BIOS, but found none, unless I am really missing something. Frantically hitting F2 when my computer boots, tells me ENTERING SETUP, enter my pasword, and gives me the setup screen. I find nothing about power saving.
