Gifts for chemo patients?
I have a friend going through chemo and it is his birthday soon. I want to get him a present to help him feel better but I don't know what would be really good for a chemo patient. Anyone here with some insight they would like to share? He lives far from me, so I have to be able to ship it.

I asked Bri the same question when I was trying to buy a corporate gift for a cancer patient (on our Board of Directors).
She suggested skincare products, as her skin was completely buggered by chemo. Burt's Bees was mentioned, which sounds like it could be suitable for both sexes. Also fruit was mentioned as I remember, because of problems with a dry mouth. I was pretty impressed with fruit bouquets (one example website - there are many), but was over-ruled in the office for being too fancy. A man might not appreciate them so much either. But don't tell me they're not beautiful.

Not to rain on your parade, Zip, but if MTP wants to buy a do-rag (I feel so weird saying that) then best go a chemo/ cancer site. Some will include a charity donation in the purchase price, which is your choice. But all will know from experience that the material/ seams/ fit will not aggravate or worry a sensitive scalp.
The idea is a great one though. |

I'm with the (unscented) skin products suggestion. Also funny books/reading material. And maybe something completely unrelated to being a chemo patient -it is his birthday after all. If there ever was a day you're entitled to try and forget about it....

If they've got a PSP or DS (portable game system), you could get them a game for it.

I used to know the name of some woman who makes sleeping hats for cancer patients out of t-shirt material. She kept hearing about how guys would have to buy the womanly ones with lace and crap on them, then cut the lace off. So she makes them out of plain, heavy oz cotton t-shirts, or you can send her a certain shirt you want made into the hat so you'll have the design you want. If I can remember her name I'll post it.

All good suggestions, I'm still trying to make a decision. He already had super short hair so I don't think he'll really miss his hair on his head.
Sleeping hat? The audio book might be a good idea, he loves to read but I know when I feel real crappy its sometimes hard to stare at a page. Maybe I could get him both an audio book and regular book, so he can choose which he'd rather do at the time.
