office security
ok... lets play out a little scenario here...
If you should happen to work in an office, or complex with high security... let's suppose a mix of standard hired security officers and throw into the mix the occasional U.S.Marine... do you feel... A) safer because of the visible show of force? B) not so safe because if they are there... your site must be considered a target ? |

Safer safer safer.
I like the fact that this college has its own police force. I like their presence in particularly crazy angry student time. As to bigger national threats...Wright Patt AFB is just down the road. Those weapons of mass destruction must surely be pointed in this direction. In which case, a thousand Marines couldn't save me. However, dying amid a thousand Marines...could be worse ways to go. ![]() |

I guess the Marines would make me feel safer from the occasional crazy who wanders in. I had a job once where they had security guards who were all ex-military. At the time, I had my very own stalker who called one night and threatened to kill me and my best friend at work. I informed security of this and they went into high alert, and I felt much safer.
On the other hand, the damn terrorists are so clever, probably one of them would manage to get hired as security and another would be the janitor who set off his very own home made bomb in the basement. I dunno. Maybe I'm too paranoid. Naturally, the Bates Motel where I now work has no security, and I feel very uneasy when I'm there alone after dark. The front office is a brightly lit fishbowl at night and anyone passing on the street can see I'm there alone. I usually have around $2,000.00 or more in my cash drawer, and that's beaucoup bucks to many of the characters around here. ![]() |

Terrified.
Especially now I work in a school. But even when I worked in an office, all we'd have was the female receptionist/s. And in a shared office block, just a tubby old man to point to the signs on the wall showing which company was on which floor.

Mostly annoyed. Gotta carry my key with me everywhere to use the elevator and open hallway doors. It's a pain if you are carrying a box of documents or something. I have to go through locked doors 4 times just to go down the hall to get a cup of coffee. And the security doesn't work so well, because shit gets stolen around here fairly often. Probably my cow orkers doing the stealing.
No armed marines though. |

In gross generality, it depends on who's paying for the security. If a host country is funding private contractors, there can be a conflict of interest regarding the security personnel's loyalties (regardless of their nationality). They may be reliable for protection from criminal elements; but, I wouldn't depend on them for protection in an ideology based attack. I'd feel "not so safe" if a false sense of security permeated a potential target work environment. I'd feel "safer" if the security force is employer sponsored; or, part of my government's forces. Even then it wouldn't hurt to develop a rapport with the security officers; so, they'll see one as more of a partner than just a customer.

At least two Pakistani moderate politicians have recently been killed by their own (whacko extremist) bodyguards. Equally, some international cricket umpires were basically abandoned by their security during a gun attack on their van. Having untrustworthy guards is not a good idea.
That said, if was working at a place which was a potential target, I'd want guards about. I just want good ones. And I'd be especially wary just around the edges of the safe zone - bad guys can spot you coming out and ambush you just outside.
