Targeted Advertising
I was looking at the online obituaries for my town. I recognized a last name, so I clicked on this fella's obit. I didn't know him, but he was only 59.
There were two mini ads right under the announcement: How to look 30 when you're 50 AND...(drum roll, please) One weird trick to stay asleep all night. Seriously. You know the cheapo ads: SOME LADY in YOUR TOWN is making 5 BILLION AN HOUR online. Or: DOCTORS ARE PISSED AT "some mom in your town" WHO DISCOVERED HOW TO TAKE 500 YEARS OFF YOUR APPEARANCE. Or: OBAMA WANTS YOU TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL AND WILL PAY THOUSANDS TO SEE YOU DO IT. But OMG. Target much? If I were a family member that might take me aback, I guess if I even noticed. |

I reloaded FB 3 times and recorded the ads they served me.
One Obama ad each time. How much is he paying for that? Does everyone get those, or does FB send them to me because I live in a very liberal town? Not that long ago, I was mostly getting ads for dating sites. Last edited by glatt; 02-09-2012 at 03:02 PM. |

That Obama ad in the middle is probably the fund-raising web site of the Democratic National Committe.

Clearly, facebook thinks you aren't getting screwed enough. One way or another, they're here to help.

I get them as well. The Obama ads started a few weeks ago IIRC.
I just did the same thing and got the "Jobs in America" Obama ad and another random ad each time.

The graph is accurate, although without numbers or an explanation, it's not terribly useful. It shows the slope of the curve for unemployment.
The negative numbers show that the economy is nose diving, and the positive numbers show that jobs are no longer being lost, they are being added. It's kind of like an airplane that gets pushed into a dive under Bush, and the stick is being pushed forward so the dive gets worse, and then Obama takes over and the stick is pulled back, but we're still in a dive, and the plane slowly levels out and starts to climb really slowly. But we've lost like 10,000 feet in the dive and are way below where we were and where we want to be. |

In the email I received from DNC with that bar graph, it was interactive,
so when you clicked on a month it showed the number of jobs lost or created... just as Glatt says. I felt the "number of jobs/month " was difficult to interpret, so I put that data into Excel, calculated and graphed the "Cumulated No. of Jobs/Month". The graph below starts in Dec 2007. Red = No. of jobs/month, Blue = Cumulative since 12/2007 The Ordinate values are for the Cumulative curve I think this Cumulative graph is easier to interpret, and that the No. of Jobs/month returned to 2007 levels in March 2009, following the stimulus in 2008. People were dissatisfied with Bush's numbers, and still are. The Cumulative graph shows where we were and how fast "job growth" is occurring. |

My previous post was erroneous. My bad. I didn't look at it closely. I thought it was the one about unemployment.
Nice work, Lamp. cool graph.

Since I went out an hour ago, my spam filter hiccuped and I received two different emails in my inbox about deals on haircuts. Are we in 1984? Can they see me? I need one of Sarge's tin foil titfers!
