From my research, this is the best way to connect a hi def tv to the cable box and dvd/blue ray player. There are a variety of cables, and not much info about the differences.

Does anyone have advice about what to make sure to buy, or what to avoid?

Don't spend more than 20 dollars including shipping on a cable. They are digital, so they either work perfectly, or they don't work at all. It's not like if you get gold plated connectors on a Monster cable they will do the job any better.

Go to newegg and buy a $5 cable with $10 shipping.

Seriously, though. Wikipedia has a chart to tell you about the different (1.0 through 1.4) versions. I'm 99% sure that all versions will work equally well in your situation, but you might want to read your owner's manuals to see if there is some feature you have that requires the latest (1.4) version. Or just buy the version 1.4 because it's backwards compatible.

Thanks, Tony. They came yesterday, and I hooked one up to Fios. On the tv was a message that said something like "your display is not authorized to recieve high quality digital signal". When I turn it on, it says 1080, and I've been using component video for the 4 weeks we've owned it.
