Southpaws and Cack-handers
As a borderline ambi and mother of two ambis, I'm very interested in handedness. But there seems to be some confusion over handedness traits. So humor me, if you will....answer as many or as few as you want to
Are you left-handed, right-handed or truly ambidextrous? Do you put the phone to your left ear or right ear? Which eye do you usually close when you wink (if you can) When you turn on the spot, do you turn clockwise or counter/anti-clockwise? Which shoulder do you sling a bag over? Which foot do you kick a ball with? Which pocket do you keep your cellphone in? If you swim, which stroke do you prefer/are you best at? Which side to you wear a name tag on? Which foot is bigger? Approximately what % of your parents, siblings and children have the same-handedness as you? thanks

Are you left-handed, right-handed or truly ambidextrous? Right hand for gross motor, left hand for fine motor.
Do you put the phone to your left ear or right ear? Left. Which eye do you usually close when you wink (if you can) Right. When you turn on the spot, do you turn clockwise or counter/anti-clockwise? To my left; not sure if the clock is supposed to be below my feet or above my head. Which shoulder do you sling a bag over? Right Which foot do you kick a ball with? Right Which pocket do you keep your cellphone in? Left If you swim, which stroke do you prefer/are you best at? Breast Which side to you wear a name tag on? Left Which foot is bigger? Left, maybe, but not by much. Approximately what % of your parents, siblings and children have the same-handedness as you? All of them are right-handed, but there are a ton of string players (as was I,) meaning lots of left-handed dexterity. |

I once read an article about how from a neurological standpoint, the big difference wasn't between left-handed or right-handed, but strongly-handed versus more abidextrous. Brain scans of very left-handed and very right-handed people looked similar, while a strongly right-handed person versus a right-handed but kind of ambidextrous person looked very different.

Right-handed for writing and suturing.
Phone to my left ear. Wink with my left eye preferentially, although I can wink with either. Turn on the spot counterclockwise. Sling a bag over my left shoulder. Left-footed for gymnastics. Keep cellphone in left jeans pocket, right jacket pocket. Prefer not to swim. If forced, use freestyle/crawl. Name tag on left. Unsure which foot is bigger. More focused on pain in left 1st MTP. The only left-handed relative I'm aware of is my mother.

Are you left-handed, right-handed or truly ambidextrous? Heavily right handed. Fine motor on my left side is very poor. The only thing I regularly do with my left that I can't do with my right is carry the baby - she is always on my left.
Do you put the phone to your left ear or right ear? Right ear. Which eye do you usually close when you wink? Right. When you turn on the spot, do you turn clockwise or counter/anti-clockwise? To the right. Which shoulder do you sling a bag over? For a backpack, my left, so as to keep my right hand free. For a cross body bag, the strap goes on my left shoulder so the bag's contents are on my right side. Which foot do you kick a ball with? Right. Which pocket do you keep your cellphone in? Right. If you swim, which stroke do you prefer/are you best at? I can't swim -- doggie paddle. Which side do you wear a name tag on? My left (having placed it there with my right hand.) Which foot is bigger? They're the same as far as I can tell. My right boob is bigger, though? Approximately what % of your parents, siblings and children have the same-handedness as you? Parents and brother are all right handed; too early to tell for my daughter but she seems to be left side dominant. (My husband's a lefty.) |

I heard that which foot you pick up first to go up steps is a good indicator. Right handed folks usually lift the left first.
I'm righty. But use an adding machine with my left because of my desks layout. Also finger the guitar with my left. I'd say I'm strongly right dominant though. My brother is ambi. Writes with his left, but throws a ball right. Spencer is left to right and throw, but does some things with his right. ... but then, he has malformed fingers in his right hand. Ripley is right handed. I turn whichever way I'm closer to I guess. Prefer freestyle to swim. I don't usually put a bag over my shoulder because they always slide off. My cell goes in my left shirt pocket, or whichever jeans pocket has less in it. Name tags have to go on the left. That's just unconscious knowledge. My boobs are pretty even.

I light a cigarette with my right hand, but smoke with my left... if you want to arm wrestle, I prefer left. When I shovel, I hold my left in front. Billiards too. Wave goodbye right, shield my eyes from the sun right, catch a ball left hand, hold my fork in my right, unless I'm cutting meat, then I cut with the right, fork left.
