file synch conundrum
There's probably not a simple fix to this problem but here it is:
I have most of my music on my desktop hard drive D: at some point I copied/backed up my library to a passport drive and began using that for a few months while I was in transition. I realized that it would be nice if I backed shit up properly but saw I had created a problem. F:\My Music has ~ 49,000 files that have been mostly cleaned for dupes and junk but has maybe 5,000 new files on it. D:\My Music has the same~49,000 files though not cleaned for dupes and junk and may have a few hundred files uncommon to F:\ If I use D: (the older drive) as the source it will put a ton of crap back onto F:, If I make F: the source it will add the new songs to D: and delete the junk, but what about the files on D: that are not on F:? I already have a headache.

Well, if you use F: as the source, and tell Windoze to overwrite existing files in favor of the source, then it will dupe F: onto D:. However!
The only time this will happen is if the source and target have the exact same filename. If you have changed the filename, you will have a whole lotta dupes. If you have different files on D:, then they will remain unaffected. I have a similar setup in that my music (125,000-ish) are on a Passport (PLUG! Luv em!) nd any new file that have not been edited for tag data/vetted for dupes reside on my home directory in /Music. Housekeeping becomes exponentially more difficult with any increase in total number of files. You may wish to try a duplicate file finding utility like Easy Duplicate File Finder or something from Sourceforge or Tucows. I have no experience with these, so caveat emptor! |

Yeah I've cleaned with Duplicate file finder and Duplicate file detective and each has not seen obvious dupes for some reason, I'm always hesitant to overwrite files in XP, 7 seems a bit safer.

Yes I use media monkey and I cleaned each drive with that but when you go to find duplicates if only lefts you delete them one at a time to help prevent accidental deletion.
An odd thing I've discovered with MM is from time to time a song will have its title, artist, and album corrupted. eg, it will show the song as Third Uncle -- Brian Eno -- Taking Tiger Mountain but the path is D:\My Music\The Beatles\Abbey Road\Maxwell's Silver Hammer. When I right click and auto tag by file name it fixes it, so a huge bulk deletion by song title would be unwise in this case.

The DB was so fucked up I just deleted it and let MM create a new one. It's still kind of fucked up.
