8/1/2005: Porcupined dog

If it's an animal pic, and not Friday, it's not gonna be good. Making the rounds is this bull terrier's encounter with a porcupine.



One hopes the puppy lives and one wonders how it could possibly have gone so wrong.

The porcupine evolved this defense to keep from getting attacked and eaten, right? Looks to me like it didn't work. I suspect rather a lot of dogs would keep attacking that thing no matter how many spines they collected.

Dogs are too dumb for this kind of defense to work, and besides, he'll heal. Sucks to be the porcupine.

seriously. if i try to bite something 238 times and each of those 238 times something sharp and pointy imbeds itself in my flesh - i'm going to quit biting it. well, maybe 240 is the magic number...

I'd hate to have this guy's vet bill. I feel sorry for the dog. Any other breed would have probably left it alone after the first encounter, BUT NO.. NOT THE BULL TERRIER.
I just hope he still has eyeballs....stupid mutt......

I'm guessing that's going to take anasthesia and a lot of time to get all those out. The vet bill is going to be huge.

reminds me of a joke about my exwife...something along the lines of "if she had as many pricks sticking out as she has going in she'd look like a porcupine..."

my dog has a little bull terrier in him and he's a little dense, but i cannot imagine any dog that single-mindedly intent on doing ill to a porcupine

None of the pictures look anything like the one here. The family dog, a not very smart dalmatian, used to mix with porqupines. My father removed the quills, but it wasn't fun or easy. The dunb - er- not very smart - dog never did learn to leave those particular animals alone.

Somewhere out there is a naked Porcupine. Inca apparently did not know when to quit when she encountered the porcupine on Victoria Day, May 23rd. These are the pictures the vet sent before the long (and expensive) procedure to remove the quills. She had thousands of quills, and her tongue was so covered, she could not close her mouth. It was pretty scary at first. She is doing okay now, but looks like a World War III survivor as they had to cut some out in places, stitched between her toes, and many quills bled on removal. There are still quills buried in her, but they should work their way out over time (I pulled four more today). She is on antibiotics and pain meds and thankfully is doing quite well. Maybe she was showing off for her new boyfriend, Rocky, I don't know; but he only got a few in him, which friends were able to remove. Ike, of course, had better sense. I sure hope that the Queen of Quills has learned her lesson...
