Got Gas??

Just a catchy phrase to get ya'll to read my thread.

It appears that quite a few Cellarites are from the East Coast while I'm all the way over here in sunny San Diego, CA [West Coast represent

] Anyway, I tore myself away from the compooter (misspelling intentional:p ) and drove into town (I recently moved out of the ghetto into the countryside) and my butt-hole puckered when I saw the price of gas!!!! It is up to $2.25/gallon for cheap-o unleaded. This, of course, really sucks because I'm 30 min. away from the nearest gas station and my new truck gets shitty gas mileage.

To make a long thread short, I was wondering what gas is going for in your neck of the woods? [No matter what state you hail from, please contribute

I'm just curious if Diego is the only place getting screwed!!!

Philly = $1.70 regular / $1.90 premium

No connection between those two facts, of course. Everyone driving a gas-guzzler always has a perfect rationalization...erm...*reason* why they need a SUV, a minivan or a truck.

Some of us still remeber when folks with licence plates ending in an even number could only buy gas on even numbered dates....

The Mobil up the street from my house has unleaded at $1.75 a gallon (I live in Philadelphia)...I believe that is the second highest amount I have ever paid for gas. (I paid $1.80 at an Exxon station in MD during a price spike 3 summers ago.)

By comparison:

November 2002: $1.40
November 2001: 95 cents
August 2001: $1.30

Here in Baltimore, the Queen of the Patapsco Drainage Basin, a gallon of unleaded regular is going for around $1.58 per gallon.

     Well, here in NW Arkansas the cheapest I've seen was $1.59, the most expensive $1.69. For plain unleaded, of course in both instances.

Some rationale as to why prices have jumped in the Northeast in the last month or so.

I understand most of that Reuters article, except how the shortage of MBTE, will cause the prices to stay up until Labor Day.
Oxygenated gas doesn't come into play here until November. I doubt they're making it that far in advance.
One of the major problems the refiners have, is the myriad of regulations means there is literally over a hundred different recipes for different areas. When supply runs low in one area the ajoining area with surplus, may not be able to ship some over due to the regulations.

aside- Low gasoline supplies mean home heating oil supplies are probably low since the refining goes hand in hand.

Well, my *reason* for driving a gas-guzzler relates to my career. Unfortunately, I need a 4X4 vehicle because I work in the desert and other areas where terrain is an issue. I'm not rich enough to afford a vehicle for city driving and one for my work. So, rather than run the risk of being stranded in the middle of nowhere USA by myself (cell phone's often don't work either) I drive a gas-guzzling truck. Believe me, if the auto industry would make one that got better gas mileage, I'd get it.

I think I do remember something to that effect too in my younger days.

I suspect part of the problem is that damaged line in Iraq. Don't know how much it truly affects us, but I would think there is definitely some psychological effect going on. Plus with general tensions up in the Middle East again...thank God both our cars get 25+ miles a gallon, and we only drive them 100 miles a week or less.

Oil heating for the home...that was a completely foreign concept until I moved out here. Never heard of it before then. But if you're right Bruce, that could mean another expensive winter for everyone around here...especially if the weather is as severe as last winter.

Thanks for the gas price link. I've visited it before, but figured by the time I drive all over hell to get the cheapest price I'll basically break even figuring in the gas I wasted to get there. Now that gas is significantly cheaper at some stations, I'll probably use this info. more often.

I read the Forbes article......since CA is still using MTBE until Jan. 1, 2004 I don't think that is the cause of our (CA) price gouging. It's seems more like a guy farts in one of those refineries or a semi-driver leaks a few gallons in transport and all of a sudden the price goes up 50 cents a gallon:p

Here in South Carolina the gas is $1.51 reg. and $1.70 premium. Sorry to hear about the prices all around. Now I have a question with prices, is it just me or is milk getting pricey too? It is $3.10 for generic and Coberg is $3.99

Is that for a gallon of regular 3% or whatever you have there?

Coberg is apparently a dairy down in the Charleston area (damnit Bruce! Use Google!).

Skim (Fat-free) milk is $2.71 a gallon at Acme here in Philadelphia. That is a bit higher than 6 months ago.

Don't know how much it truly affects us, but I would think there is definitely some psychological effect going on. Plus with general tensions up in the Middle East again...thank God both our cars get 25+ miles a gallon, and we only drive them 100 miles a week or less.
