I have been forwarding that along since it showed up, because Bean my old Boston Terrier did that exact same thing. There was always a large plastic playground ball in the house, that same size, and merely saying "ball" or moving towards the closet where it was would drive him into immediate frenzy.

There are other birds that do that too, but it doesn't seem to be endemic because not all birds of those types do it. There must have been a Leonardo Da Birdy that dreamed it up, maybe from watching Ron Popeil's Pocket Fisherman commercials, then spread the wealth. I suppose a Crow could learn from watching a Heron, and vice versa.

We saw a lot of those green herons in Costa Rica. I guess baiting is quite common for them. Pretty smart.

I remember seeing the ravens in, I think it was England, dropping some sort of really hard nut on the street in the crosswalks, so the cars ran over and cracked the nuts for the birds. The birds then scooped up the busted nut.

That was several years ago on 'Nature' with George Page, I think.
