Postmark

A woman in GA pulled half a dozen letters out of their safe today. They are all from her husband in the Navy to her in 1946. The cancellation stamp on each is by the US Navy Fleet Post Office, and reads ATOMIC BOMB TEST and BIKINI ATOLL. I've never seen one of these, I wonder how long they used that stamp? Certainly not before August of 1945, this one was July 1st 1946, but how long after this?
Oh, I just found out that ship, on that date, was destroyed and sunk in an Atomic Bomb test at Bikini Atoll.

I found out today that postmark was arranged. The officer was allowed to send five letters to be postmarked with that special stamp, on the day the ship was destroyed in the atomic bomb test at Bikini. The letter said he was on his way home if he was allowed, as there had been some turbulence in the marriage. The letter also explained the special postmark but she had already ripped the end off.
