I don't think it's that people car more about cats than other people. It's that we have a "face" to latch to in the tragedy and we bond to that "face", but not to the invisible others in the tragedy.
If it was a picture of a drowning person, I'm sure we'd all want to know if that person was rescued, and hope that he was. Likewise, we're probably not nearly as concerned about the many other faceless cats and dogs and pets that drowned. |
