I have to say that I think it's funny that Americans are all into naming traditions and stuff, because I would truly have classified that as an olde Englishe type thing until I moved here.
I don't know anyone in the UK who has the same name first name as their father. There are certainly no "Juniors" and "the thirds" ...even in the monarchy. there's none of the "Yes he's Chuck A. Bucket II, we're gonna call him Deuce" the middle names, yes there is often a hint of family in there, but usually just grandparents' names. For those who haven't seen it in the zillion other threads, these are our sprogs' full names: Hebe Amazon Petra Beestmonster Hector Pendragon James Beestmonster Thor Artemus George Beestmonster they rock. I don't care what you say, and I spit on your stupid standardized forms that can only cope with one middle name :p

My stepchildren have two middle names AND a hyphenated last name. Standardized forms tend to spit back on them.

My nephew has two middle names: both his grandfathers' names.

I have two middle names, but one is out of permanent loan ...
The eleven year-old daughter of an acquaintance was hassling her mum for a middle name because she didn't have one (really she was trying to get her mum to marry mum's then boyfriend, I think ...). So, in jest, I told the girl I had two middle names and she could borrow one of mine if she promised to take care of it. I let her choose one of the two names and it's now hers, so long as she looks after it. She was thrilled, and still proudly uses this middle name two years or more later. Whenever I see her I ask whether she's dropped it, or scratched or damaged it in some way and she says no, she's taking good care of it and wants to keep it. This is a true story.

Limey, that's absolutely lovely. What a fantastic little story.
I have two middle names. Sara and Eleana. Eleana was for my maternal Nan (thought everyone called her Nelly), Sara was just a name Mum and Dad liked I think, though it may have come from Dad's family initially. So full name: Danielle Sara Eleana C. My Bro's middle name is Frank. That's usually the middle name of the first born sons in Dad's family. A tradition about to die, if he doesn't have any boys :P The girls both have nice middle names (Nash and Miranda) Amelia Nash and Sophie Miranda. I don't think either of them were chosen with any family significance. |
