I finally know what a merkin is!
YOU've always said it's a slang for "American" but it's NOT! You naughty, naughty Brits - having the laughs on us! well, now we all know what a merkin is. How could you?

we never said it was slang for American ( which is actually 'gas tanks') y'all just assumed it was cause it sounds similar.
and we just omitted to correct y'all

hey, I say all y'all. Because I noticed you were a Merkin and relaized that you must understand that while wearing your stars and stripes top hat and chewing the gum of bubbles. Doesn't the OED also cite it as a mop for cleaning a cannon, in the words of the late H. Allen Smith -- where I learned the word as an adolescent? Goes in the bore, I gather, and the term was 17th-18th century.
