A central belief of all mainstream Christian religions is forgiveness for people who have done wrong and are genuinely sorry. So it's hardly surprising.

Doesn't mean the laws don't apply to him and he won't have to deal with the legal system. (Didn't read the article.). It also doesn't mean they won't fire someone who might hurt the church because of their behavior. It also doesn't mean the victim's family will forgive this guy.
