A little piece of trivia...
I've just been reading an article about spiritual autobiography: 'Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners' and came across something that caught my attention. Referring to the books Bunyan's wife is known to have brought with her, and suggested as a possible link to the style of work Bunyan later produced, I found this:
Arthur Dent's The Plaine Mans Path-way to Heaven I had no idea that The Hithchiker's Guide to the Galaxy was such an outstanding pun! |

re-parse
DanaC was reading an article about a book written in the 1600s by imprisoned preacher John Bunyan, called 'Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners'. The article mentions some books that Bunyan's wife had, one of which was called Arthur Dent's The Plaine Mans Path-way to Heaven It turns out that Arthur Dent was a real person: an early Puritan author. DanaC was struck by how the absolute genius of how The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, in which the central character is named Arthur Dent, is actually an outstanding pun on this earlier tome. Me too. Douglas Adams is my hero. |
