Chimney Liner

We have an oil burning furnace that the installers set up to vent straight into a bare brick chimney with no topper on it. We didn't know at the time that it was an issue, but in subsequent years, the burner servicing company has been on me to get the damn thing lined, and put a lid on top. The brick sheds 'crumbs' and the rain turns that into a gritty paste that sits in the bottom of the chimney, and slowly blocks the friggin hole up. It got bad enough once to choke the burner, and fill the house with noxious fumes. So, I finally got my head out of my arse and saved the money I needed to correct this.

It was beyond my capability, and it was feared that I'd either make it worse or fall off the roof to my death, ...but the quote i got was $1500!

My brother is a plumber, and I have on old friend that lives nearby who owns an HVAC business. Between them, we got the job done for $550 ish. I still have to stuff the hole at the bottom with steel wool and then mortar it up with high temp cement for insulation (as soon as i find some), but it's good to go otherwise.

here's the view up the chimney from the bottom:

its about 35 feet up to the ridge:

here's the liner in the box:

you have to use stainless steel with an oil furnace, or this job would have been a lot cheaper.

my buddy, Dan feeds the 'pull rope' down to my brother at the bottom of the chimbley:

the plan is to guide the tube down through the chimney from the top and use the rope to pull it down. The flu was a 6" square, the liner is a 6" cylinder. It just made it.

it's kind of pretty:

we had reached the bottom at this point, but fed all but about 10" into the basement:

easier to cut the slack off down there, than try to do it up there on the ridge. Dan had to take a break at one point because his hip was coming apart from sitting like that too long

this topper is actually 2 sections:

dan is putting the bottom half down over the tube, and using a special expanding sleeve nail in each corner to fasten it to the top of the chimney:

the top attaches to that, and covers the chimney against the weather. Now, to get back down off the roof:

in the basement, just a matter of attaching the liner to the furnace exhaust tube thingy:

here's the bit I still need to finish with steel wool and cement:

reusing this pic, but it makes sense chronologically this way... here's dan trimming it to meet the burner exhaust: he put a gash on his forearm that bled the whole rest of the time he was there:

all set to be attached....

they used stainless zip screws and metal tape to seal it up:

Fun stuff. We did the same thing, and coincidentally enough, my BIL is a plumber.

You could also use this chimney liner

We didn't have to do the liner, but we got the chimney cap done a couple years ago after the raccoon incident.

Cool stuff Jim
,
No I dont have to do one , But Now I Know How. Thanks !!!

Good idea using gravity to feed the tube DOWN the chimney .

You can Prolly find the Hi temp motor at Lowes , use the Corse steel wool ,

Good Job !!!
