He set out to beat the heavy favorite who had a supercharged Vincent. He succeeded by wringing that JAP engine to the max (but still making less power), and making the bike as light as possible. He said why worry about comfort when the ride lasts 10 seconds. Sticking the fuel in that pod makes the mechanicals easy to service.
