I've been wondering what the term actually means as well.

Mind you, by the time a new word or phrase has come to my attention, it has usually acquired the tag [archaic] in the dictionary.

right, right. I followed both those well researched archival links from before my time and found they're both pointing to IRL Forks.... I was hoping to lure the reader to the newfangled *Virtual Forks*. y'know. You should drop in. audio, video, whatevs.
