For me, gas is cheaper now than it was 20 years ago. My real income has risen enormously even with inflation taking its toll. $0.89 a gallon in 1980 was a much more serious impact to me than $2.45 a gallon is now.

I can remember my Dad complaining about paying $0.35 a gallon back on a road trip in the late 60's. Thirty Five cents a gallon seems cheap, but back then a new Chevy was $1700-$2200 and a middle class income was $20K a year back then.

I paid $1.879 on the way home from work today (regular unleaded. Super was over $2). Slangsylvanian prices (for product from the same manufacturer) last week were running around $1.749.

(I don't "shop" for gas. I pull into the most convenient station under the logic that I will waste as much in gas as I will gain by paying a slightly lower price if I ride around some more)

I ventured into town yesterday and in one area:
low grade = $2.29
mid grade = $2.39
high grade = $ 2.49

Regular unleaded two days ago at my last fill up at Sam's Club was $1.599/gal.

I don't know why it is so much cheaper here all of the sudden, compared to you coasties.

Geez, Sam's Club's here don't have gas. But some Costco's do. I filled up there yesterday w/ cheap-o unleaded for $2.04/gal

ever since the gov't started the probe into the rise of gasoline prices the cost has gone down by an average of 7 cents (observation, not fact

) well, that and the usual labor day price gouging.. (sp?)

Prices continue to drop here in Grandview (Western Missouri suburb of KC, for those who don't know). I just filled up this morning at price of $1.4999 per gallon...

I cannot for the life of me understand how there is such a big disparity in pricing around the country, and why all of the sudden it drops, then goes up...

My theory is that the price of fuel is based upon the results of a high stakes card game somewhere in the bowels of DC. GM wins, the price of gas goes down. Exxon wins, the price goes up.

Had to laugh when I read the complaints about all my US cousins on Gas or as we say in the UK (PETROL)..Try buying gas here at a rough calculation gas is..$4.77 per gallon.

But for comparison, has it always been that high?

I understand that's a fairly consistant gas price in the UK...we're just getting used to these higher prices

That bitch up the street is still running at $1.839. Time to have a little talk with that guy *baseball bat in hand*

Our gas stations around here are generally a bit high though...if you want really good prices, you have to head over to Rt. 1 in Trevose--Wawa always keeps the other competitors low. 3 months after 9/11, the big chains tried to up their price to $1.029. Wawa held firm at .959...the big chains dropped back to .959 after a few days.

In the end, I would imagine we pay the same amount for gas as our peeps in the UK pay for petrol over the course of a year. They tend to have smaller cars--more fuel-efficient. Assholes like Ep want their SUVs.
