I read blazingly fast regardless of format. I've not noticed any significant drop on reading with the Kindle. If anything, I'm up over last year. While I do read a mix of Kindle and DTBs, I've read 98 books up to today. Last year I hit my 100 in September.

I read 5 or 6 each week, free from library. Yes, my grass is kneehigh and my garden, what the deer hasn't eat sucks

I think that the big difference is just in having to turn the page twice as often, and perhaps in the slightly poorer contrast with digital readers versus print. I wonder if there would be a speed difference in the same material read in a lower contrast newsprint format than a straight black-and-white print?

Otherwise I think I'm reading just as fast as ever on the Kindle, myself. I am a very fast reader to begin with, though - maybe the difference just isn't as noticable to me. As the technology and interface improve and mature, I'd wager that if there are any minor speed gaps, they'll close up with time.

Woop, and the big news (slightly expected) is that Amazon has released the Kindle 3: smaller and lighter than the Kindle 2 with better contrast and double the on-board storage. Wifi has also been included; there are in fact two models being released - one wifi-only for $139 and one 3g+wifi for $189. They've done away with the "nub" navigation stick on the front and gone to a directional pad, and repositioned the page forward/back buttons on either side to actually make a bit of sense now.

I figured something was up with the sudden sale on Kindle 2's and the release of the graphite DX. This one looks like a nice little bump up in features and design.

I might consider a K3 wireless only, just to have something smaller to carry around.

looks like everythings been covered, I got a kindle 2 recently, about a week before the price drop. I too always liked the feel of a real book and resisted this forever. Since it arrived I've used it every.single.day. Also haven't spent a dime on any content, took me maybe 2 hours to d/l 1500 books, yes I'm a thief. I'm also to cheap to pay for a cellphone plan, and the fact that the kindle uses sprint's cellular network...for free, well that's just awesome.

Oh my word. The yummy, Kindle-y goodness of the K3wifi.

I could have been doing a lot of other things today, but I was installing the firmware upgrade and reading, reading, reading.

(and taking a leather punch to my very expensive K1 cover that needed a teensy little alteration to work for the new one.)

It needs a name.

My first Kindle is called "Bartleby."

The DX-Graphite is "Mr. Atoz."

Since I snuggle up with it in bed, it's male (sorry to disturb any of your GonG fantasies, gentlemen), so I cannot call K3wifi "Marion the Librarian," besides, I didn't like The Music Man all that much.

I don't like "Kwiffy" at all. Sounds naughty.

Leaning a bit towards Alexander, in honor of the Great Alexandrian Library, but not sure if I want to stay with that.

Yes, I do.

Most of the folks on Kindleboards name their Kindles. It's a very personal experience. And it gives you a name to yell out when you're reading pron.

No integrated light, but you don't really want that ... backlighting = eyestrain. there are a variety of aftermarket booklights that work well with the Kindle, including lighted covers that a lot of people seem to like.

I have a fancy cover, and, as previously stated, use either a clip-on booklight or an LLBean headlamp.

Thomas Thornhill (hopefully no longer a private) will have to make do with an iPad, I guess.

I'd like a Kindle, but I've got a shelf of books I need to read before I consider a product that makes getting more books easier.
