Ah! Another Billy Wilder fan!
We just watched my relatively new (birthday gift this year) copy of Sunset Boulevard on New Years Day. What a great movie.

Also a bit of a World War II and disaster film buff.

Yeah...I suppose Sunset Boulevard could be classified as a disaster film...

It's not that old by my standards (if it was made while I was alive, it isn't old) but I am watching the newly released DVD of THX-1138 and it's awesome.
I watched the whole movie last night, as well as partway through again with the commentary track. The way they setup the sound editor's commentary is a bit clumsy, but you can watch his whole set without having to wait for the dendrite to pop up on the screen and hit "enter". I still have the Disk 2 extras to go through.

Saw Cool Hand Luke over the weekend. If you haven't you must. You'll find yourself turning it over in your head later.

Seconded Nominations:
It's A Wonderful Life favorite movie of all time, and definitely the odd one out in this list. The Manchurian Candidate freaky scary A Touch of Evil Most excellent jazz score, don't miss it. New Nominations: Fail Safe with Henry Fonda Cape Fear with Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck (perhaps I would not have children now if I had seen this movie before they were born) Night of the Hunter more Robert Mitchum

Vulgarity? Ultraviolence, yes. But I don't think they even say fuck once in the movie ...
Give it another try. The reaction you had was carefully crafted by Kubrick.

While I love Clockwork Orange in both its filmed and written forms, for me, the film sort of failed to capture what I thought was the central theme of Burgess' book, namely, that society determines what is right and wrong, and so individual freedom is a nonexistant concept.
