It was a band called ELF..saw then as support to Deep Purple when Burn was released and Coverdale took over from Gillan Mis 70's..

The earliest picture I can summon into my head is of one of those one-man-band guys. I'll say 19th century, and the bass drum one came first. Total guess, though.
