Dunno 'bout Mitch Egan, but in Vermont the original reason for a deposit was to keep the roads clear of litter. Back in 1979, I think a nickel had the equivalent buying power of $27.95 today. Give or take a few bucks.

(actually, it would be about equal to a 25 cent deposit today)

This.

It was a big deal when it passed in Maine.

It's the main source of income for homeless (winos) around here. I always used to give them the benefit of the doubt that the alcohol stink was from the cans they had collected, but now I work in a store and encounter then every morning I'm unlucky enough to need to be near the registers, I know my faith was misplaced

The problem with can deposits is the cans have to be returned intact so the bar code can be read. That takes up way too much room.

Pfft. You had it eeeeaaaasy...For us it was up before dawn to be at our first job licking the street clean every morning. Then it was home for a breakfast of cold gravel.

Is living in a shoebox a step up or down from living in a shoe?

thx.

sometimes it's like the whole dealership wants something from me at the same time. And when it's first thing in the morning, and it's 5 emergencies that could have been managed if the asshole salesmen and sales managers had done their jobs properly... I was boiling.

I'm better now.
