That's to pre-heat and dry the wood before it's fed continuously, to keep the fire going while you indulge in your chosen debauchery.

We have mostly water on the Mexican side, it's the Canucks that are a 1500 mile problem. Oh, plus you can see Russia from Sarah Palin's house.
