[quote=wolf]Hmmm. Movie based on comic book. Rulebook says ... "will suck."QUOTE]
In respectful disagreement, I humbly submit this list of movies that did not suck, yet were based on comic books: 1) X Men (both of 'em) 2) Spiderman (both of 'em) 3) Superman (well, the first couple of them, anyway) 4) Batman (well, the first couple of them, anyway) 5) Men in Black (the first one...second was a letdown) 6) The Rocketeer 7) Hellboy (well, *I* liked it) 8) Mystery Men Admittedly, some of these come from graphic novels, which aren't precisely the same as comic books, but close enough for this discussion. Now...movies based on *video games*...there's a surefire recipe for suckiness.

I would say Mortal Kombat was actually a good movie based on a video game. It wasn't a great movie, but it was a fun popcorn flick.

And, as per SOP, only the first one.

If you think about it, even though AVP might be rated r, it MIGHT still be scary. Think about the ring and Sixth sense. Both were pg-13 and scary as hell. The thing that m. night shyamalan does, especially in signs is he makes use of the fact that what's not on screen sometimes is scarier than what is on screen. So, again, we shouldn't assume anything about avp, now that i think about it.

By the way, I saw AVP and even though it couldn't have gotten worse reviews, for what it was, I really liked. Yes, it was loaded with faults, but other than that, I have seen much worse movies, for example Chronicles of Riddick.

The Inky once noted a movie as rated PG for, among other things, "dancing". This turned out to be the Inquirer's little joke, though; the MPAA site did not list that reason.

The '80s Tanya Roberts movie Sheena was PG, and included two fairly long nude scenes. One was a quick full frontal female scene, and the other was a fairly lengthy topless scene. Both involved non-sexual skinny dipping. PG!
The ratings system is really bizarre in the US. I have no idea how they come up with those ratings. I personally believe that nudity is not a big deal when it's non-sexual. It becomes a slightly bigger deal when it's sexual, and violence is the most harmful thing to have in a movie. I have the feeling that most of the US would disagree with me. You can show bloody bodies all over broadcast TV, but NYPD Blue has to darken its nude scenes now for fear of an FCC fine. Last edited by glatt; 08-16-2004 at 03:24 PM. |
