2005 Super Bowl Commercials

Did ya have a favorite?

Overall, I was disappointed. If I had to pick a fave, I'd go for the careerbuilder.com commericals with the monkeys.

I only saw a couple, but I liked the Batman preview. Looks like we may actually get a good Batman movie!

I thought the Mustang convertible commercial was pretty funny. Fargo.

Interestingly, the Cat ad was NOT selling the spaghetti sauce ... Anybody else remember what it was?

I thought the monkey ads were overdone for careerbuilder.com, cute but overdone since they had about one per quarter. I did get a chuckle out of the last one, though ... with the board meeting and the asskisser.

The funniest one, I thought, was Fedex/Kinkos ... which probably won't run again, since it directly referred how to make a successful SuperBowl commercial ... Celebrity, Animal, Dancing Animal, Talking Animal, Hot Chicks, etc.

Most annoying was the Blockbuster reversing down the driveway ad ... which I saw three times in a row during the pregame.

The Mustang/Fargo ad was good, but also overplayed. Did that run twice in a row in the final quarter or not?

Budweiser, which had my favorite commercial a couple of years ago with the Clydesdale bow to the WTC gave us another tearjerker this year with standing ovation in the airport. Nicely, nicely done. They also scored with the Cedric the Entertainer Designated Driver ad, I thought.

Most of the car ads were pretty unremarkable.

The "Smooth not rich" "Rich not smooth" ads were annoying not funny. There has to be a better way to sell beer ...

Oh, I did like the Heinekin ad.

I forgot to mention that I also liked the Bush beer commercial where they are welcoming home the troops. I thought it was moving and tasteful.

The cat and spaghetti sauce was for Ameriquest (who also sponsored halftime), I believe. So was my favorite, the guy talking on the cellphone and saying "You're being robbed" while coming to the counter in the convenience store, and getting his ass kicked by the owner and his wife. The theme throughout their commercials was something to the effect of "everything isn't always as it seems".

Oh yeah, that one was funny.

I saw where it was headed, but expected him just to be held at gunpoint by the store owner, not to get clocked over the head with a baseball bat.

Humor can work for or against a commercial. Consider the number of these ads that have been discussed, or will be discussed based on content, without recall of the product.

Put me down for the monkeys. My office is just like that, except we don't have the one human; we're all monkeys. Ook ook.

I thought all the ads were fuckin' lame as shit this year. Very disappointed. Even given the circumstances surrounding Janet's breast, you'd figure the ad folks would come up with *something* both clean and clever. Shitty. The Pepsi ones, the Heineken ones (Brad Pitt was especially awful).

I was so lackadaisical that I even missed the ONE ad that I was supposed to see for work (I am writing about Napster's new portable music service). Looking back on the ad, I am not surprised how I could have possibly overlooked that one.

Anyway, if anyone cares, here is the archive. Suck.

The Napster ad was pretty unremarkable.

They were selling their subscription service with unlimited downloads. BFD. If it catches on it will take the Itunes folks about 10 minutes to change their service to beat it, if they see any change in their profitability.

So I was browsing the ifilm site... found

http://www.ifilm.com/ifilmdetail/2652831

this little gem where Jon Stewart goes on crossfire....(and the one linked from there about Jon Stewart's remarks after).

It's been a long time since I laughed that hard....

I ordered that episode on DVD. Classic, and it was mentioned as a contributing factor (whether true or not) to Crossfire's cancellation.

The only one that made me laugh at all was the Pepsi one with the guy from Queer Eye. We rewound that one a couple times to watch his expression.
