Identity Theft

There's an ironic public service commercial running on television in Canada.

It's purpose is to warn old folks that they could be scammed by fraud artists who are trying to get their personal information.

Credit card numbers, social insurance numbers ... even your mother's maiden name ...

The crusty old geezer, who is the spokesman, makes a strong case to his peers not to be fooled by such scammers.

Then, in the final shot showing the official contact information numbers, this old actor appears in the red uniform of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Isn't that impersonating a police officer for the purpose of conning the old folks into thinking this commercial is official. If it is officially endorsed by the RCMP, which I doubt, what are they thinking using an old civilian actor in police uniform as a spokesman?

There must be some other identity theft stories ...

But this is a public service message, right? And who's paying for it? The federal government?

I don't know who is behind that ad. I'll pay closer attention when it's on again.

Unrelated to that ad, is this strange case involving the RCMP:

Revenge made ex-Mountie do it.
