Bought 2 jars of cheap Bolognese Sauce the other week. Well, a jar will do 3 meals and I can't make a sauce as cheaply (27p - about 50c a jar!)

Had the first tonight - with red onion, red pepper, red lentils, mung beans (green, for variety) and sweetcorn. Now, as I poured the jar in, my usually accurate nose caught a whiff of something unpleasant but all too familiar. Aniseed? Fennel?! No, since when is fennel a standard addition to bolognese, especially the cut price version?

So I checked, and there, the second to last ingredient, hiding in with the rest of the herbs (I don't always check that far down the list - just the main ingredients) was fennel.

So I added extra garlic and some Tabasco to make it into a spicy pasta sauce instead.

FENNEL?! I ask you!

Anyway, just had a bowl and I think it was diluted enough by my additions not to matter too much. I now have to go back and check the similar jars of Chilli and Sweet & Sour I bought.
