My kids' schools are the Faller Suns(for Theodore Faller, a navy pilot who stayed with his jet rather than eject so that he could steer it away from the school, and died before they could get him out of the burning plane), and the Monroe Tigers. The high school here is Sherman Burroughs High school, and the mascot is the Mighty Burros, which seems odd, becasue I never thought of a burro as mighty.

Ohhh, I just remembered that the elementary school I went to before we moved back to my 'rents home town in first grade was the Boone Station Bucking Broncos. It was in Ohio, though, not Kentucky.

"Mr. Maroo" is perilously close to "Mr. Magoo."

Then there's always Mr. Celery.

Elementary - Pelicans
Middle school - Cougars
High school #1 - Wildcats
High school #2 - Lightning
College - Bulls

I'm now teaching at a school who have the Fighting Hawks for their mascot.

I was in the first graduating class from Cypress Bay (high school #2) and it drove me crazy that my peers chose Lightning for our team name/ "mascot." You can't have somebody dressed up as a lightning bolt! I tried to convince administration that we should get someone to dress up as Zeus and walk around with lightning bolts in his hands but no one ever listened to me.

Well, we weren't good at any sports, but our debate, music, and theatre departments were frequently state champions. We had a higher than normal nerd population, that's for sure.

I don't know if Brits have been exposed to old Bugs Bunny cartoons, but it was a common catchphrase back then to dismiss idiots with the expression, "What a bunch of maroons."

Elementary school: bisons
Middle school: mustangs
High school: stallions

But I grew up with Brutus Buckeye, who appears to be closely related to Mr. Maroo!

My brother's elementary school mascot was an Otter. Cute, but by no means intimidating.

I think the winner for lame mascot might go to Key West High School -- "Home of the Conchs!" Really? A giant sea snail?

Otter at least bite. Better than being pecked to death by a hen.

I remember riding a bus through WV and seeing a sign that same "Welcome to Poca, home of the Poca Dots!" - just checked, and yes, they are still there!
