What do you reckon would happen...

... if I replace three AA 1.2 volt 600mA NiCd rechargeable batteries with three AA 1.2 volt 2500mA NiMH rechargeable batteries?

The batteries are in a solar powered light system, with 9 LEDs; but these are on two circuits and power is alternated by a small system inside the main unit.

I don't actually want the alternation and have considered trying to bypass the circuit, but decided not to fool with it.

They are still 1.2 volt yea? I don't think anything will happen.

The current rating is about the maximum current the battery can deliver to whatever it is powering. So long as the voltage is the same and you are not lowering the current rating nothing will happen except that you may need to recharge rather less often.

Welcome to the Cellar, rivets. Would you be bifurcated?

Sounds a bit of a precursor to "hey watch this...."

That"s a rather personal question isn't it?

Hi Rivets, thanks for the advice.

Okay guys, I'll give it a shot and report back. Hold my beer.

I'd only worry about the charging aspect of the whole thing -- it's a solar charger, right? NiMH and NiCd don't accept the same charging voltage/amperage.

"If your charger isn't specifically labeled as handling NiMH batteries, then don't put NiMH batteries in it. You'll ruin your batteries (and maybe start a fire)."

Or see here.

You'll get a divide by zero error and your house will implode.

Don't mix the batteries.

I will try one more battery shop, but if they don't have the NiCds I'll go NiMH.

If I accidentally create a black hole or every molecule in my body explodes at the speed of light, my apologies.

Well, I couldn't get the NiCds, so I went with the NiMHs.
It has been a week and it hasn't blown up, melted down, or or sucked the Earth into a parallel dimension, so it seems to be okay.

Who was holding my beer?
