Census Bureau research shows that reaching out to respondents with an advance letter and reminder postcard if necessary can boost census mail-back rates and save money. For every 1 percent increase in households that respond by mail, taxpayers save about $85 million in operational costs associated with census takers going door to door to follow up with households that did not mail back the form.
I seem to remember the last census, 10 years ago, was pages and pages.
The one 5 years ago was too.

They changed to a short form this year....with the longer form (now called the American Community Survey) sent to a small percentage of the population on a rotating basis throughout the decade.

That must have been what I got both times. The second time, 5 years ago, they wanted too much information and I refused the bitch ringing my doorbell every day for two weeks. Then her supervisor by phone for two weeks, then his supervisor for two months by mail.

There are those who believe that they are only required to provide the number of people in your household...and asking anything beyond that is unconstitutional.

They would be wrong. You could be fined or in the worst case, tossed in the can, for not responding, although highly unlikely unless you attempt to make yourself into a martyr for the cause.

I agree the long form is cumbersome and potentially intrusive, but I see the value of the data and dont see the nefarious intent projected by some (not you).

For example, I'm not telling them when I leave for work and when I return. That's none of their fucking business. Thieves want that information too. Oh, wait, the government, thieves... hmmm.
