They had to put their 'chutes through first.
Though the B-17 does have two entry doors: the little hatchway thing in the forward fuselage and a larger door forward of the right stabilizer.

Even the larger door would be tough with a chute. At least for me, maybe a skinny, bendable, youth could do it.
