It looks like if he'd dozed a tiny bit later, he would have both avoided the end of the rail, and hit a rumble strip that might have woken him up before he even hit the side of the rail.
I was once awoken by those strips when driving during sleepytime. Scary. This morning I passed an upside-down car at the end of a traffic jam on the Beltway.
