I've got no idea.
Is it solid or hollow? I'm assuming solid, but the notched end looks like it's got something going on in there other than just a notch. But that could just be the lighting. |

it is utterly solid, except for the well noted notch.
Not tapered. mercy, you're right and wrong on the $$$.. retail, it is $$$, but I paid fractions of a cent on the dollar for it, part of why I was so stoked. Not a roller from a printer, but that is a really good guess. not a fork blank another clue, it is stainless steel.

Well, i will go with what I thought it was the moment I saw it, which is probably wrong, but it looks like a table leg.

Or food service. It's a big rolling pin for rolling out the dough for frozen pizzas.

With it being refined to very specific tolerances I believe it has to be for some kind of industrial use.

Is it a giant punch of some sort? Or perhaps an axle/spindle situation? It doesn't look overly smooth, so I'm guessing it's not used in an exacting/close tolerance way...
Ooh, is it from an industrial food mixer?

This is the simplest of objects. It is a 1 1/8"x22" keyed stainless steel shaft. I got it at the local second hand marine shop, Second Wave. I love this place. As you can see, I paid a small price for it. You may compare the price *per foot* at this site for reference. It weighs a little over six pounds. I reckon it was.. hell. I don't know. It was cut short when I bought it. I wonder if it was a propshaft.... maybe not. (Steering) Wheel shaft, sure could be. There's a round shallow hole opposite the keyway where a setscrew would secure the hub of whatever the hell it was.
It is a lovely piece of metal.

Um.
*Technically*, you're right. Fine, no one will provide the answer I want. It is the base of a little Christmas Tree of Devil Duckies. I made it as a gift for a friend (her daughter actually). I learned that she likes Devil Duckies. .... I couldn't help myself, friends. You know me.
