Here are two measuring tools I find absolutely fascinating.
The first image is the "old" version, the second and third images are the "new" versions. The question is, what are they measuring ? . |

Cool! I've never seen anything like that.
Is it some sort of estimating device for estimating the board feet of lumber in a tree? |

It somehow measures basal area in a forest? How crowded the forest is?

The bottom two are prisms. The deviation is a function of the distance from the object.

Basal area gauge. But I don't really understand completely how it works. And especially don't understand the modern ones.

OK, so I guess you count the number of fat trees in the woods. And you use the metal gauge to see how fat the trees are so you know whether to count them or not based on how much each tree fills the window. I'm guessing the prisms work by either completely splitting the image of the trunk if the tree is too small to be counted, or else leaving a little bit attached if the tree is fat enough to be counted.

The end goal is to determine the board feet of lumber in a given plot of land.
The timber cruiser stands at the center of a plot of trees, The prism (wedge) gauge is probably easier to understand. It basically is used to count the trees inside and outside a certain distance. By looking thru the prism, and rotating 360 degrees, the cruiser counts the number of trees inside (pic 2) and outside (pic 3). By measuring the diameter of the trees inside the plot, the timber inventory (total number of board ft of the plot) can be calculated. This "sample" from the center of the plot can represent a much larger area. The width-steps of the other gauge (pic 1) select for trees of a maximum given diameter. The chain is used to fix the distance from the gauge to the eye. Both of Glatt's tools above and the old gauge here show that our forefathers were not dummies. |

I'm beginning to think that Glatt has somehow eaten Clodfobble's brain and thereby derived its powers.
This is like a creepy "One Step Beyond" episode
