So he replied asking how much I would be willing to pay, and he explained that it's an unusual situation because the firm already paid him. But that he normally charges $200 for individual portrait sessions. And he pretty much made all the points that Foot did.

I was pretty surprised at how much he wrote. It was a really long email for somebody dickering over some fraction of $50.

I said I valued what he did, but the picture was only worth $20 to me. And I hoped that I wasn't offending him.

He hasn't responded yet. And $20 is even more than I wanted to spend, so I'm cheating myself. I should have offered $10, since that's about what it's worth to me.

Interesting negotiations over nothing.

Maybe he thinks you're coming on to him and are willing to barter. Let's see if he suggests further negotiations over dinner.

Foot's points are valid BUT he has already been paid for the work. All those points should already have been taken into consideration when he priced the job. he's milking it. It wasn't a portrait session. How many images did he take to get that one? the price should reflect the time and effort it will take for him to find the file (?convert to appropriate format), and send it, plus a bonus in appreciation of his artistic talent because you wouldn't be interested if it were a crappy pic, but HR would still have been satisfied.

There are people who try to dicker over everything. Not that they can't afford it, or don't think the product/service is worth it, they just like the game. I've seen a guy talk a tour guide down from $25 to $15 then give the guide a $20 tip.

Personally I never try to talk a pro down, I either give her the $5 or walk away.

I haven't heard back from him. I guess when I told him $50 was too much, and he responded, offering to negotiate, he didn't like my $20 offer.

Oh well. It's a relief, actually. I think $20 was too much for a medium resolution digital image that he was already paid to make.
