The 'kernel', for lack of a better word, is about the size of a Rice Krispie, maybe ½ inch tall, and fairly hard, with a rough texture. The 'cage' (?), the expanded part, is about an inch tall, maybe a shade over. All of it was on the end of maybe four-five inches of weak, limp stem. I know it's a plant. At least, I'm fairly certain it's not an animal. So, wtf is this? And, if you'd like a differently oriented, harder to see pic:
