He came in too steep for too long to pull up and achieve level flight. He got the nose up to avoid plowing into the ground; but, the aircraft was still descending and did a belly flop. The aircraft had already slowed to deployment speed and the ground friction probably caused further loss of speed while the bounce also changed the pitch sending the aircraft back down again. That wasn't tarmac beneath them.

Thanks. Yeah, it looked pretty soft, good for slowing a heavy skid load, but not for aircraft landing... if it wants to take off again. We could see why he failed, but it disappeared behind the standing people, so we couldn't see how it failed. I wondered if it nosed in, skewed sideways, or just ran out of room?

There wasn't much to see IRL either between the other spectators, the dust cloud raised by the aircraft, the trees at the end of the bleachers, and finally the smoke. We suspected the aircrew was killed; but, didn't get confirmation until later on television news.

They built 2400 of them, but only 47 AC-130 Gunships.

By the end of WW II had technology they wanted to use but were short on materials. These two jets were built with wood airframes.
